The Grand University of Arts and Sciences

Light reveals, shadow conceals. What we illuminate, we become.

We conclude our tour of Breheimen with a return to the capital and a closer look at the Grand University of Arts and Sciences, where much of our story takes place.

The Grand University of Arts and Sciences is known throughout the Kingdom of Breheimen as the preeminent institution for aspiring scholars and artists alike. Its storied halls are open to all subjects of the realm, welcoming eager minds from every walk of life to partake in the rich tapestry of learning it offers. There, knowledge is shared freely, for no rigid distinctions are drawn between its scholars based on social standing, lineage, or even their potential for greatness. The University's gates stand wide, allowing students of noble birth to sit alongside those of humble origins, and welcoming those whose lives are touched by the Muse as well as those whose talents are of a more mundane nature. The only prerequisite is a true desire to learn, and no one is denied the opportunity to study if possessed of the will to pursue it.

While the path of learning is available to all, those found to be Muse-touched must undertake an additional journey. Individualized training is required to fully explore and incorporate the gift of the Muse into their creative endeavors. These fortunate few see their talents shaped and refined by masters who understand the complexities of merging the Habitatio Musae and the skills of the individual creator. Under such careful tutelage, their unique abilities are deftly woven into the fabric of their work, allowing them to achieve feats others can scarcely imagine.

This inclusive and adaptive approach leads to the recognition of four distinct ranks within the Grand University, each marked by the interplay of skill and Muse-touch:

Acolytes, the first and most numerous rank, consist of students who have entered the University without displaying evidence of Muse-touch. Driven by dedication and determination, these scholars engage in rigorous study, honing their craft through traditional means. While they may lack the supernatural spark of other students, their work often surprises with its innovation and depth.

Apprentices are identified by their awakening to the touch of the Muse. These students are celebrated for their extraordinary potential, as recognized by both peers and elders. Their studies are more complex, involving specialized guidance to help harness and direct their newfound gifts. Sometimes students arrive at the University already aware of their awakened Muse, while others may find the Muse visits them during their studies at the University. By decree from Queen Karelia herself, only those who show evidence of the Muse-touch may apprentice to a Master of Arts.

Upon completing their education, students become Journeymen, the third rank. These individuals have graduated from the University without being Muse-touched. Despite this, their expertise is still shaped by their education and emerge well-versed in their chosen disciplines, ready to make their mark on the world. In their capable hands, creativity thrives even without the Muse's influence.

The most prestigious rank is that of Master, or Master of Arts, reserved for those who have finished their studies and are Muse-touched. Under the sponsorship of a training Master, apprentices undertake a rigorous, individualized course of study not only to gain further depth in their chosen art, but also to understand how to effectively leverage the power of the Muse within them in a responsible way. These graduates command a mastery of both their art and the supernatural powers infused within them. Their works often define the cultural landscape of the kingdom and set new standards for artistic achievement.

Founded in the earliest years of the Kingdom of Breheimen, the Grand University owes its origins to the vision of Queen Karelia, one of those remarkable few whose artistry was fueled directly by the divine touch of the Muse. An inspired bard of no small renown, the Queen understood well the necessity of a formal institution that could nurture the burgeoning creative energies of the newly formed kingdom. While the former Free City-State of Breheimen had become a gathering place and community for the Muse-touched, Karelia saw the untapped wealth of talent that sprang up around her throughout the founding baronies and realized that without guidance, much of it would remain unshaped and transient. By establishing the University, Karelia aimed to bind the disparate threads of creativity and intellect into a robust tapestry that would drive the prosperity and renown of Breheimen for generations to come. An institution with a chartered mission, it became a paragon of learning where the noble principles of Virtue, Glory, and Truth were not merely taught but lived. These ideals were purposefully interwoven into the scholarly and cultural foundation of the realm, ensuring that the seeds of creativity would take root across the Kingdom and its founding Baronies.

It was not an easy undertaking. In the beginning, Karelia faced opposition from traditionalists who saw little value in education that extended beyond the practical skills needed to survive in an unforgiving world. Yet her Muse-driven passion for artistry and lore proved infectious, and she gathered around her a core of like-minded visionaries, each eager to see Breheimen develop more than just its resources. These early collaborators were the first to join the University's assemblage of masters, drawn from across the known world to share their profound knowledge. Under their stewardship, the institution grew, and the very act of learning became a revered pursuit within the kingdom. The once fragile realm blossomed, its culture and innovation flourishing as the University began to produce generations of scholars, bards, and artisans who would carry Karelia's vision into the wider world.

From its humble origins, an entire district of Breheimen's capital city grew up around the University. Its influence extended far beyond the academic, for the culture of learning attracted guilds, artists' ateliers, and publishers' workshops, each vying to support or profit from the creative fervor that emanated from the University's elegant halls. The institution became the beating heart of a new society, one where artistic and scholarly innovation were the most valued coin. Every Barony sent young men and women to study at this grand locus of knowledge, ensuring that the spirit of creation and inquiry touched every corner of the kingdom.

The University today stands as testament to Queen Karelia's words: "Light reveals, shadow conceals. What we illuminate, we become."

The Grand University is organized into divisions which specialize in particular fields of study. Each division is led by a Headmaster and managed by a Council of senior teaching Masters of Arts empowered to oversee the affairs of its particular college, and by extension, the practice of the art within the kingdom at large. Occasionally, in the spirit of interdisciplinary scholarship, Masters of other divisions will be invited to sit on the council of another division. Councilors are members of Court and have the right to directly advise the Crown on matters of state pertinent to their specialties.

Divisions of the Grand University ebb and flow over generations in their size and import. All told, there have been over one hundred distinct schools under the banner of the Grand University over its history. A few of the major divisions are listed below.

The Collegium Bardica specializes in the performing arts. Its mission is to further the education of musicians, poets, storytellers, and lore-keepers in Breheimen. A division with a storied tradition, it is led by the Concilium Bardica ad Regum, or as it is more informally known, the Royal Bardic Council. Tasked with guiding both the University and the Crown in matters of culture and history, the Council ensures that the voices of the past and present harmonize to enrich the kingdom's future, making it a vital thread in the fabric of Breheimen's identity.

The Academie Illuminatore offers specialized instruction in the scribal arts and their myriad practical applications. In its elegant halls, the arts of calligraphy, illumination, cartography, and other related visual expressions are explored in meticulous detail. Scholars here learn to blend precision with artistry, often producing works as beautiful as they are functional. The techniques and skills fostered within this division find application in nearly every facet of life in Breheimen, from the signing of treaties to the crafting of exquisite manuscripts. Their council styles themselves The Archivists Eternal.

The Musae Seminarii is the seminary for the Church of the Muse, focusing on understanding the theology surrounding the divine gifts of the Muse and the vessels it chooses, the Muse-touched. Led by the most senior masters, called Praeceptors in the Seminarii, scholars here ponder the mysteries of creativity and inspiration, seeking to comprehend how these gifts influence both the individual and the world at large. Their work bridges the sacred and the artistic. Their council, the Ecclesiasticum, jointly leads the Musae Seminarii and the Church of the Muse.

In a different vein, the Armipotenschola instructs students in the combined skills of arms and armory. Under the tutelage of those with both practical experience and Muse-touch, students learn the intricacies of the crafting of fine weapons and their effective martial application in battle. While there are also schools that go deeper into the individual arts of metalsmithing and leatherworking, the Armipotenschola's charter underscores the importance of martial readiness and technological advancement in the kingdom. Its council, the Sovereign's Artificers, ensures that when Breheimen takes the field they have the very best equipment.
