The Calendar of Breheimen

Tridecemes, decemes, and the reckoning of the years

The Breheimen calendar consists of 360 days neatly arranged into 12 divisions, known in the ancient Breheic as "tridecemes." Each trideceme contains exactly 30 days, and these are further subdivided into segments of 10 days, referred to as either a "tenday" or "deceme." The rhythmic progression from one deceme to the next echoes through the land, guiding the agricultural, cultural, and even political life of the Kingdom, with each tenday resonating with the season's distinct character and activities.

Winter brings the Dies Pruinaes, or "Days of Frost," often the most trying time of year, particularly for the northern baronies of Hinterhold and Ironmount, enduring biting cold and harsh conditions. Dies Nivisaes, known as the "Days of Snow," follow with their tranquil but unyielding blanket of crystalline precipitation. Dies Pluviaes, or "Days of Rain," mark the last of winter, signaling a thaw that brings both relief and unpredictable landscapes.

Spring begins with Dies Satioaes, the "Days of Planting," where each Barony is busy sowing seeds of both harvest and ambition. These days flow into Dies Floreraes, the "Days of Blossoms," where the air itself seems to sing with renewed hope and color, reflected in the many local festivals celebrating the successful emergence from winter's grasp. Spring concludes with Dies Mellaes, or the "Days of Honey," a time of sweetness and growth, with bees and dreams alike in full flight.

Summer opens with the intense Dies Caloraes, or "Days of Heat," a period of sun-drenched labor and maritime solitude. The Dies Eurusaes, or "Days of Wind," bring a hint of unpredictability, the breath of change cooling the land. This is the time of midsummer festivals throughout the kingdom, and grand tournaments in the capital. Dies Tempestaes, known as the "Days of Storm," are last, where the summer heat begins to wane, and the weather brings volatility as well as awe-inspiring (and sometimes dangerous) raw displays of nature.

Autumn is the season of preparation for the coming winter. It commences with Dies Messisaes, the "Days of Harvest," where bounty and gratitude fill the Kingdom as the crops are harvested and prepared. Autumn moves into Dies Venatusaes, or the "Days of the Hunt," where communities gather to pursue both game and fellowship. Most local harvest and hunting festivals take place in this trideceme before the weather turns truly cold. The year closes with Dies Copiaes, the "Days of the Store," as communities gather the fruits of both labor and creativity in preparation for the winter ahead.

The numbering of years pays homage to the founding of the Kingdom of Breheimen, formally termed Annos Regni Breheimen, though most often simply noted as ARB.
